My Alway Ancestors

Vyceniae’s father was Edwin Alway. He was born in Iron Acton in 1843, the second child of Diana Alway. The family story is that Diana had fallen in love with a Gypsy and, when her father would not allow them to marry, she announced that she would have his children anyway and she did. I have been unable to identify the Gypsy so I know nothing of my Gypsy ancestors but I have been able to take the Alway line back many more generations. Diana’s parents were Robert Alway and Sarah Smith; her grandparents were John Alway and Dinah Smith; and her great grandparents were Robert Alway and Ann Rodway. The oldest ancestor I have been able to identify was William Alway who died in Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, in 1563. His descendents lived in and around Hawkesbury for over 200 years and during this time the LONGDENS, the STINCHCOMBES, and the RODWAYS joined our family tree. As a result of a bit of intermarrying here and there, William Alway was the fifth great grandfather of both Robert Alway and Ann Rodway.

The ancestry report uses 'Ahnentafel' numbering. This means that the numbers for a person's parents will be twice as large as that person's number. For example, if a woman's number is 15, her father will be number 30, and her mother will be 31. Her child will be number 7.
