When he was hired to do some work for the Workhouse, he was aware that there had been smallpox in the facility and that doing this work could cost him his life. He had a partner who was not "saved" and Edwin told his partner that he should go home because he was not yet ready to meet his maker. Edwin did the work himself, contracted smallpox, and died.
